Another fine sunny day greeted us for our away day trip to Colchester Athletic along with another dry bumpy pitch. This was always going to be a difficult game for the boys and so it proved.
First half begun with both sides feeling there way into the game on a difficult pitch. After a cagey first ten minutes, the boys begun to dominate the play, forcing 3 corners in a five minute spell of relentless pressure.
A great corner from Tyler sees Jason head just wide from close range. The boys were struggling to hit top gear but that was due to Athletic pressuring the ball at all times and not allowing us to get the ball down and play. Spoiling tactics maybe but it was working to good effect untill the breakthrough came.
Sam Hodder was away down the wing, his cross was punched away by the keeper, the ball feel to Henry on the edge of the box and he cooley chipped the ball over the keeper and into the top corner for 1-0.
The boys seemed to be lifted by the goal and the football began to flow. Constant pressure sees the boys force 4 corners and the Athletic keeper was having a stormer. Bradley, Tuckers and Slacky all go close with efforts.
Out of the blue, Col Athletic force there first corner of the game.a wicked swirling corner is headed into his own net by Henry. 1-1 and football can be so cruel.
This knocked the boys out of there stride for most of the half until a little bit of magic that is required to change a game.
A long throw by Jack finds the feet of Slacky, he controls it and lobs the keeper from fully 25 yards. 2-1 and to be fair it was only what the boys deserved for dominating the first half.
Second half begun much similar to the first, the ball was bouncing around on a bumpy pitch and football was proving difficult to play with any real quality for both teams. The back four were having solid games and as a unit we were solid all over the park. The boys kept the pressure on the Col Athletic defence and were rewarded with what looked a very dubious penalty midway through the second half.
Bradley gratefully slotted home from the spot to send us 3-1 up.
The game was as good as won now but you try telling Sam Hodder that.
He collected the ball on the halfway line and after beating three players en route to the goal, he smashed home for a superb finish to make it 4-1.
The game stumbled to a close and at times it wasnt pretty but all that aside, this was a good result neverless. Not pure football that we have been used to but three points in the bag is all that matters. Man of the match went to our keeper Harry for some good handling and a very assured performance. |
